Advocacy

The Cultural Advocacy Network of Michigan uses advocacy to help Michigan communities thrive through the promotion of cultural opportunities, thereby improving the quality of life for residents across Michigan.

CAN promotes the value of arts and culture organizations and the impact they have on a community's sense of place and economic vitality, as well as the importance of preserving the history and heritage of Michigan's people and places. CAN acts in the following ways:

  • Through our lobbyist, CAN engages in direct outreach to legislators, educating them on the importance of arts and culture institutions to the economic and social fabric of Michigan.
  • CAN members gather to meet with and communicate with their legislators during CAN's annual Advocacy Day activities.
  • Regional meetings with individual legislators.
  • Established and works with the Arts & Culture caucus of the Michigan Legislature.
